UAE Parking: How It Actually Works
Street parking across the UAE is managed by each emirate, and rules can vary by location and time of day. In Dubai, zones are assigned by the RTA with different rates for business districts, mixed-use streets, and residential areas. Abu Dhabi operates Mawaqif with standard and premium bays and resident permissions in some neighborhoods. Sharjah relies on zone codes that appear on street signage and meters, while Ajman and the northern emirates generally follow simpler zone groupings. Rates and hours are always displayed on local signage, which should be treated as the source of truth.
Typical paid hours run during weekdays with peak times around business hours; some areas charge on Saturdays or late evenings, and many districts offer free parking on public holidays or specific hours overnight. Most locations support starting a session via SMS or an official portal. When using SMS, you usually send a message that includes your plate details, a zone code printed on the sign, and the number of hours you want to park. The parking authority then confirms by SMS with start time and expiry.
A generic SMS structure looks like: plate information, the zone code, and duration (for example: "PLATE ZONE 2" to request two hours). Exact wording, separators, and destination numbers differ by emirate and telecom operator, so always copy the format shown on the sign where you park. UAE Parking helps you assemble the correct structure for your city and plate type. For privacy, your plate numbers stay on your device and are sent only to the parking provider or your mobile operator when you initiate a session; we don't sell your data and we don't inject ads into transactional flows.
